The Series

CHOICES is scheduled to be a twenty-six-book series targeting children ages 6 to 11. When the series is complete, it will look much like a small set of encyclopedias, with one book title for each letter of the alphabet. Each of the stories deals with a different ethical or personal dilemma that children in this age group face on a daily basis (see “Story Themes”).

Young readers determine how the story will end.

Midway through each of the CHOICES stories, the main character is faced with a difficult decision, but it is the young reader, not the main character, who actually makes the choice. Three choices are offered, from which young readers select the one they think is best. Each choice leads to a different story ending, all of which demonstrate the outcome of the choice made. For more information about reading the CHOICES books, see “Reading Methods.”

The CHOICES series helps young readers learn to make good choices.

Through this interactive format, young readers are able to consider ethical dilemmas posed by real-life challenges like vandalism, bullying, cheating, changing schools, telling the truth, and doing their best, as well as the universal desires to fit in, make friends, and experience success. When young readers are able to make a choice for the main character and, in turn, experience three unique story conclusions that play out in the main character’s life as a result of the choice they made, they begin to learn how to make good choices in their own lives.

Owen’s Choice was a terrific book because we got to decide how to end it . . .

Many of our students make tremendous decisions on a daily basis.  Living in poverty is always difficult, and these decisions essentially make an impact on the community, the family and the students future.   It is so refreshing to be able to choose books that allow the students to think though their choices and see the outcomes of their decisions.  Thank you…

I’ve come across an excellent book, Owen’s Choice…. besides being a very well-written story about a child trying to fit into a new place, it is a book that will help teach children how to make good choices.
